You stand out by doing the right kind of marketing, built on a rock-solid foundation. Being the best-kept secret in your industry? That’s a disaster for your business.
I hear it all the time. “I’ll just post more on Instagram.” “I need to show up on more podcasts.” But without the clarity of what you actually want to be known for, more visibility is just more noise.
And I get it. Especially for those of us in the country, where humility runs deep and tall poppy syndrome is real, it can feel uncomfortable to own your expertise. But here’s the kicker: if people can’t see it, they can’t buy it.
The Two Essentials of Standing Out
There are two key ingredients to becoming known:
- Your expert positioning
- Your visibility strategy
And if you skip that first one? If you charge ahead with visibility without clarity, you’re just spinning your wheels. You’re saying a lot, but people aren’t connecting the dots. On the flip side, if you have strong positioning but you’re hiding behind your computer, no one will know you exist.
The sweet spot is when both work together.
What Do You Want to Be Known For?
This is the question I ask all the time: If I said your name in a room, what would people associate with you?
If you don’t know the answer, or if there isn’t one clear, powerful thing that enters the room before you do, your message might be scattered. And scattered brands are forgettable.
You want a reputation so cohesive that others are saying your elevator pitch for you. That’s when your name gets mentioned in rooms you haven’t even stepped into yet.
The Rural Reality
When you live rurally or regionally, becoming the local go-to might be easier. But scaling that visibility? That takes intentional positioning. Especially when your ideal client isn’t sitting in your small town of 800 people.
You need to be the expert that someone chooses even when you’re hundreds of kilometres away. And that only happens when your message is clear, your offer is defined, and your presence is consistent.
Visibility Without Positioning is Just Noise
The flashy stuff is tempting. Reels, podcasts, newsletters—it all feels like momentum. But none of it sticks unless you’ve done the hard yards underneath.
So before you schedule another post, ask yourself: Does this reflect what I want to be known for?
And if the answer is no? Pause. Rethink. Go deeper.
Own It. Name It. Claim It.
