The Growth Strategy You're Probably Sleeping On
Oct 29, 2026We talk about growth like it only ever means one thing: more leads, more audience, more people on the list, more calls booked. And look, you do need that. New people need to keep coming into your business.
But if that's the only growth lever you're pulling, you're missing one that's sitting right under your nose. The people who already said yes. Who already trust you, already know you get them results, and are already in your world.
That's retention. It's not flashy. It won't show up in a reel about funnels or offers. But keeping a great client for longer is a hell of a lot easier than constantly finding a new one.
Retention Starts on Day One, Not at Renewal
Here's where most of us get it wrong. We treat retention like something that happens at the end of a client relationship, when the contract's about to run out and suddenly we're scrambling to get them to renew.
Retention doesn't start there. It starts the minute someone becomes a client. It's the experience you give them. It's the result you're getting them. It's making sure renewal is baked into the relationship from the start, not a surprise conversation six months in.
For me, that looks like staying obsessed with surprise and delight. Things like the virtual retreat I added into the mastermind this year, a space for my clients to step out of the day to day and think about where they're actually going. Or making sure my curriculum never sits still. What worked in 2024 isn't what works in 2026, so I'm constantly watching what's changing for my clients and updating what I teach accordingly.
None of that is part of the sales pitch. Nobody signs up expecting it. It's just how I keep staying valuable.
Give Your Best Clients Somewhere to Go
If someone's been working with you for six months, they are not in the same spot they were in when they joined. Their problems have changed. Their goals have changed. Their business has moved.
So renewal shouldn't just be here's another six months of the same thing. At renewal, give your best clients an actual next step, a roadmap that matches where they are now instead of where they started.
Look at your best existing clients, the ones you'd clone if you could, and ask what they need next. Maybe you solved part A for them. What's part B? Is there a continuation offer, a higher level of support, a strategic review that would genuinely move them forward?
Don't Give Away the Renewal
One last thing. I had a client recently who wanted to give a departing member a free alumni membership, no conversation, no offer, just hand it over.
I get the instinct. But it skips the part where you actually give them the chance to renew. Before you give anything away, offer your best clients the opportunity to stay. If they say no, that's when you surprise and delight with something else. Just don't give away the value before you've offered it.
Stop Sleeping on the Clients You've Already Got
Acquisition matters. Keep growing your audience, keep generating leads. But don't get so busy chasing the next client that you forget to look after the ones you've already got. Sometimes the real growth strategy isn't let's go get new clients. It's how do I become even more valuable to the people who are already here?
